Abstract Fourier transform resonance Raman and surface enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy were employed to study hypericin, its sodium and pyridinium salts including their deuterated isotopomers. Spectra of these compounds were obtained in the solid and the adsorbed state, as well as in solutions using protic and aprotic solvents. The results allow for the identification of marker bands which are characteristic of specific intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions and of the tautomeric state. Thus, it was found that in the solid state and on adsorption in the silver/electrolyte interface, hypericin exists as the 1,6-diketo form, while in protic solutions the 7,14-diketo form prevails. On deprotonation, the 7,14-diketo form is favored even in the solid state. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
